It is a field of enquiry dominated by ex soldiers, a handful of dedicated historians and professors of British military history or Hispanic studies and those devoted fans of Bernard Cornwell's books and of course the Sean Bean series/5(2). The first volume of Oman's classic seven volume history of the Peninsular War, this is one of the classic works of military history and provides an invaluable detailed narrative of the fighting in Spain and Portugal. As my first real book on the period I was hoping for something more in the military history direction.

This book is a political history of the Peninsular War. It is is extremely well written and researched but it's more academic focus made is a very slow read for me/5.

The Peninsular War, –, was a military conflict between Napoleon's empire and the allied powers of the Spanish Empire, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the Kingdom of Portugal, for control of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars.

This book has an interesting genealogy. The Duke of Wellington never actually wrote a history of the Peninsular War, indeed he refused to do so. But during the war churned out a lot what we today call “after-action reports” and several campaign summaries. Reid, who has written a good many works.

My favorite general history of the war is Charles Esdaille's The Peninsular War: A New History which is a very illuminating account of this corner of the Napoleonic Wars. Rory Muir's Salmanca is one of the best battle histories produced of the Napoleonic Wars for any theater.

Muir not only explains the battle, but also how he reconstructed events from the patchwork of sources. This, the third volume of the History of the Peninsular War, covers a longer period than either of its predecessors, extending over the sixteen months from Wellington’s arrival at Badajoz on his retreat from Talavera (Sept.
